A Letter To Egon Kisch

Poetry reviewer Geoff Page has been laughing out loud in coffee bars, which is a bit unusual for him. What's brought this on? He's been reading Tim Thorne's latest book, A Letter to Egon Kisch. Egon Kisch, as not everyone will remember, was a German Jew expelled by the Nazis who famously in 1934 'jumped ship' at Port Melbourne, breaking his leg. He then managed, despite cynical legal impediments, to stay in Australia for four months and write a book about us called Australian Landfall, published in 1937.
